Intimate Bonds Reflection No. 11: Getting Naked Is Sex

When did getting naked become something we rush through?

Clothes come off, they land beside the bed, and we move on to the part we have decided counts as sex.

But what if getting naked is part of the sex?

There can be incredible anticipation in slowly undressing someone.

    A button undone.

A shirt gently pulled from their shoulders.

A hand brushing newly exposed skin.

A pause simply to look at them before continuing.

Undressing someone gives us an opportunity to notice their body, to kiss and touch the skin we uncover, and to let anticipation build.

Being the person who is undressed can be just as powerful.

There is vulnerability and excitement in allowing someone to see your body and having them take their time with it. To look. To touch. To appreciate.

Maybe this is what we miss when we treat foreplay simply as preparation for the “main event.”

Kissing, touching, teasing, oral pleasure and getting undressed don’t have to be steps on the way to sex.

    They can be sex.

Sometimes slowing down and enjoying everything along the way can be every bit as exciting as where we eventually end up.

So the next time the clothes start coming off, perhaps don’t rush.

    Take your time.

    Notice.

    Enjoy.

Let anticipation have some room to grow.

    Sometimes getting naked is sex.

A Question to Carry With You

What might change about your experience of sex if getting undressed became something to enjoy instead of something to get through?

Intimate Bonds Reflection No. 8: Intimacy After the Awkward Moment

Not every intimate moment flows beautifully.

Sometimes bodies make unexpected noises, someone loses their rhythm, a position doesn’t work as planned, or a toy refuses to cooperate. A sexy sentence comes out completely wrong.

Sometimes we laugh. Sometimes we feel embarrassed. And sometimes that little moment makes us want to retreat entirely.

But intimacy was never meant to be a perfectly choreographed performance. It’s two very human people bringing their bodies, emotions, insecurities, desires, and occasionally terrible coordination into the same space.

What matters isn’t whether awkward moments happen. It’s what happens between us when they do.

There can be something incredibly intimate about being seen in an imperfect moment and discovering that the other person hasn’t gone anywhere.

We don’t have to perform here.
We just get to be together.

A Question to Carry With You

What would help you feel comfortable enough to stay connected, rather than embarrassed or withdrawn, when intimacy doesn’t go quite as planned?

  • Intimate Bonds Reflection No. 1: Connection is the foundation. Intimacy is the expression.

Intimate Bonds Reflection No. 1: Connection is the foundation. Intimacy is the expression.

When we hear the word intimacy, many of us think about sex. But intimacy begins long before that.

It grows in moments where we feel safe, seen, and understood. In the little things we choose to show up for each other, every day.

The strongest connections are built through ordinary moments, repeated with intention.

    A small practice

    • Choose one ordinary moment today to be fully present with yourself or someone you care about.
    • Ask a real question, listen to the answer, or offer a small piece of care without rushing past it.
